Why install artificial nest boxes?

Nesting sites for birds and animals requiring hollow trees are becoming very rare in Australia due to the vast destruction of older forests.  It takes around 150 years for a tree to develop a hollow large enough to accommodate animals such as the Brushtail possum. 

Provision of nest boxes by suburban residents can be of great benefit to wildlife.  They can also be enjoyable if placed in a position where you may see elusive and shy animals otherwise nearly impossible to spot.
